A crown covers and protects a tooth that has lost too much structure to be filled. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring a replacement to the teeth on either side.

On the day

What to expect.

  1. Assessment of the tooth and a discussion of the options.
  2. Preparation of the tooth or teeth involved.
  3. An impression or scan so the crown or bridge can be made to fit.
  4. Fitting, adjustment and a check that your bite meets correctly.
Every mouth is different. This is the usual shape of the appointment — your dentist will tell you what applies to you before anything begins.

What people ask.

Why a crown rather than a large filling?

Once a tooth has lost enough structure, a filling no longer holds it together and the tooth becomes liable to fracture. A crown wraps the tooth instead of sitting inside it.

How long does it take?

Usually two appointments — one to prepare and take the impression, one to fit. Some cases differ.

Will it look like my other teeth?

Materials and shade are chosen to match the surrounding teeth. Ask to see the shade selection before it is made.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

They are restorations, not permanent replacements, and their lifespan depends on the underlying tooth, your bite and your oral hygiene. They are checked at each examination.
