Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a post placed in the jawbone, which then supports a replacement tooth. It is fixed in place and cared for like a natural tooth.

On the day

What to expect.

  1. An assessment of the site, including imaging of the bone.
  2. Placement of the implant post.
  3. A healing period while the bone integrates with the post.
  4. Fitting of the replacement tooth once healing is complete.
Every mouth is different. This is the usual shape of the appointment — your dentist will tell you what applies to you before anything begins.

Questions

What people ask.

How long does the whole process take?

Implant treatment is staged over months rather than weeks, because bone needs time to integrate with the post. The timeline depends on your bone and whether preparatory work is needed.

Am I a candidate?

That depends on the amount and quality of bone at the site, your gum health and your general medical history. Some people need preparatory treatment first. It is an assessment, not something that can be answered online.

What are the alternatives?

A bridge or a partial denture can also replace a missing tooth. They differ in cost, in how much they involve neighbouring teeth, and in how they feel. All three are worth discussing.

How do I look after an implant?

Brushing, flossing and regular professional cleaning, much as with a natural tooth. The surrounding gum and bone can still become inflamed if plaque builds up.
