Teeth Whitening

Whitening lightens the natural shade of teeth using a professional-strength product, either applied in the practice or in custom trays you use at home.

On the day

What to expect.

  1. A check that your teeth and gums are healthy enough to whiten.
  2. A discussion of realistic shade change for your teeth.
  3. Either in-practice application or custom trays made to fit.
  4. A review of the result and advice on maintaining it.
Every mouth is different. This is the usual shape of the appointment — your dentist will tell you what applies to you before anything begins.

Questions

What people ask.

Does whitening work on everyone?

No. It lightens natural tooth structure, so results vary with the starting shade and the cause of discolouration. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.

Will it make my teeth sensitive?

Temporary sensitivity is common during and shortly after treatment and usually settles. Tell your dentist if you already have sensitive teeth.

Why not just use a shop-bought kit?

Professional treatment starts with checking that your teeth and gums are healthy, and uses trays made to fit your mouth so the product stays where it should.

How long does it last?

It fades gradually, and how fast depends on diet and habits. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking all shorten it.
