Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is inflammation caused by bacteria at and below the gum line. Caught early it is often reversible; left alone it damages the bone that holds teeth in place.

On the day

What to expect.

  1. Assessment of gum health, including measuring the gum pockets.
  2. Cleaning above and below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar.
  3. Specific advice on cleaning the areas that are being missed.
  4. Review appointments to check whether the gums are responding.
Every mouth is different. This is the usual shape of the appointment — your dentist will tell you what applies to you before anything begins.

Questions

What people ask.

My gums bleed when I brush. Is that serious?

Bleeding usually indicates inflammation from plaque at the gum line. At the early stage it is very often reversible, which is exactly why it is worth raising rather than ignoring.

Does treatment hurt?

Cleaning inflamed gums can be tender. Freezing can be used where needed. Tell the clinician if anything is sore and they will adjust.

Can gum disease be cured?

Early inflammation frequently resolves with proper cleaning and better daily hygiene. Once bone has been lost it does not grow back, so the goal shifts to stopping further loss.

How often will I need to be seen?

More often than someone with healthy gums, at least initially. The interval is set by how your gums respond.
